60 Years of Oprah

30 Jan, 2014

Oprah Winfrey. Oprah. Lady O. Media mogul. Queen of Daytime Television.  She’s been called several different names and holds numerous titles ranging from owner to philanthropist.

We’ve seen the story of Oprah unfold right before our eyes. Some of us can remember her talk show television debut. Throughout the years we’ve shared “Ah-ha” moments, laughed, cried and grown together.

Oprah was the distinguished guest in millions of homes every day via syndicated television. Her presence lingered during dinner with friends when discussions somehow diverted to that ‘one episode last week.” Our coffee tables were redesigned regularly to add the newest selection of Oprah trinkets.

And who didn’t look forward to “Oprah’s Favorite Things” episode that almost became a holiday tradition? Global book clubs were formed and lasting friendships were made during her daytime reign. We are proud of Oprah. Not just because of her roots that she never shied from or her array of outstanding accomplishments.

We love Oprah because of who she is. We all know her achievements and if not, they’re not hard to find. The barriers she continues to break will have ripple effects for generations to come.

However, our love for Oprah goes deeper; Deeper than her being successful in a male-dominated world, deeper than her being a woman of color. We love Oprah because through it all she is still one of us.  She’s a woman.

She’s a woman who has struggled with weight. We all remember the red wagon.  She’s a woman who deals with the daily misconceptions of others whether that’s while shopping (hello Zurich) or marital decisions. She’s a woman who asks for help in deciding what to wear, what to say and how to take that next step.

She’s a woman…Phenomenally. And because we see it…because it’s so close we can taste it, we continue to write our own individual stories. We continue to have our own “Ah-ha” moments. We continue.
