A Day in the life With Kendrick Lamar

07 Aug, 2013

The Trending Report spent the day with superstar rapper Kendrick Lamar and the TDE family while they were in Chicago for Lollapalooza.

Our journey with Kendrick started in 2011 when we booked him for his 1st show in Chicago at The Shrine. A  few hundred people showed up and saw a great show.  As time went on we watched his fan base and status grow. In September 2012 he sold out the congress theater and we witnessed 3,000 plus fans rap every word of his songs. Kendrick has gone on to win numerous awards, grace the cover of magazines, and top the charts at a rapid pace.  Yet, with a return to Chicago for Lollapalooza he remembered his beginnings and the friends along the way to stardom.

Watch our interview with Kendrick Lamar

It was amazing to watch this mild-mannered, laid back Compton kid go from relaxing backstage to electrifying 1000’s of fans in a matter of minutes, it was out of this world!

He hit the stage at Lollapalooza and performed hit, after hit, after hit.  The only thing that stopped the music was a disabled man in a wheelchair crowd surfing…..IN A WHEELCHAIR! Kendrick literally stopped rapping and the entire audience turned their cheers towards the mystery man in the wheelchair, as they passed him over the entire crowd to an amazing front row seat. After closing his set to thunderous applause we departed Lolla.

No rest for a rap star. Back to the hotel where he listened to new beats and songs other artist wanted him featured on. Once new music was chosen, time to change clothes and  head to another sold out concert at the Aragon.  I watched him give the same energy and enthusiasm for the second show as he did at Lolla and this show started at 1am!

It’s that kind of connection with people that makes Kendrick Lamar a special talent.  His fans identify with every single syllable of his songs because his music relates to everyone.  It’s not everyday that you have dealings with the poster boy for hip-hop, but this year we got to enjoy the show and create this piece for you cause he happens to be “the homey.”
