On Tuesday, the 44-year-old announced that he has completed treatment for alcohol addiction, revealing in a candid Facebook post that the issue is something he’s “dealt with in the past and will continue to confront.”
Thanking loved ones for their support, including estranged wife Jennifer Garner, Affleck explained that the decision to seek help stemmed from a desire to set an example for his children and others facing similar obstacles.
“I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be. I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step,” he wrote.
“This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery,” he added.
Affleck and Garner announced their separation back in 2015, but have appeared to remain amicable since. In his post, Affleck expressed gratitude for being able to get the assistance he needed while Garner tended to their family.
“I’m lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I’ve done the work I set out to do,” he wrote.
Last month, Affleck was on hand at the Oscars as brother Casey accepted Actor in a Leading Role honors.
