Common’s AAHH! Fest Brings Kanye West Home to Chicago

22 Sep, 2014

In a time dominated by bad news and negativity, a pleasant chill settled over Chicago, and a cast of Hip Hop greats descended onto the stage in Union Park to deliver one of the most memorable concerts I’ve had the pleasure of attending. Spear headed by Chicago’s own, Common and his Common Ground Foundation, the 1st annual Ahhh Fest brought together one of the most eclectic lineups in rap that bridged generations and genres alike.

As summer draws to an end and fall takes its first breath, the brisk air of the Windy City cooled a modest but eager crowd of Hip-Hop faithfuls as they made their way onto the Union Park grounds for what promised to be a night to remember. This was evident as soon as the opening act hit the stage.

First up was one of raps worst kept secrets, Jay Electronica. Known for leaving fans wanting more, Jay Electronica did not disappoint. Blessing fans with tracks that broke him onto the scene not too long ago, you couldn’t help but wonder “what if” as Jay Elec owned the stage. The talent and charisma was undeniable and just like that, the international rapper of mystery was gone again.

Un-Common of Chicago fests, the event ran as smoothly as the performers that graced the stage. Some of Chicago’s most decorated DJs were enlisted to keep the party going as artists prepared for their sets. Small breaks between performances allowed for onlookers to make a quick trip to the plethora of restrooms and refill their preferred beverages. The energy level never wavered and excitement grew as did the crowd.

The next portion of the show was nothing short of iconic, as living legends MC Lyte and De La Soul took onlookers back down memory lane as history was made and the evolution of Hip Hop was on full display. What could of been a concert of its own, the tone was officially set as the crowd’s intensity rose with every word delivered by Rap’s hall of fame MCs.

With the crowd officially prepped, the Ahhh Fest would continue with what could be best described as The Who’s Who in Chicago music and the City of Big Shoulders’ talent was on full display as Grammy/Oscar Award winning recording artist Jennifer Hudson serenaded the crowd with a bevy of hits as she effortlessly proved why her voice is one of the most respected in the biz.

The second most anticipated moment of the night was when special guest host Dave Chappelle took the stage. In what appeared to be a spontaneous conversation with the elated crowd, Chappelle joked about Chicago weather and memorable visits. Making light of his sabbatical showbiz, Dave brought out outspoken and sometimes controversial Lupe Fiasco. Evidently confident and comfortable with performing in his hometown, Lupe ripped through hits that put him on the national stage while showcasing some of his new material as well.

Without further adieu, the man of the hour made his presence felt as Common stormed the stage, grasping the crowd in his hands and taking them on a historical ride through one of the most respected catalogues in rap lore…As if he had been shot out of a cannon, Common wasted no time in establishing his dominance as one of the genre’s best performers. This would only set the stage for what was yet to come.

Turning the reigns over to his veteran counterpart Twista…Chicago’s beloved couldn’t miss as he performed hit after hit, proving that he will always have the heart of his hometown. Bringing the crowd to a frenzy seemed to be the plan as this all-star roster had the hundreds of fans right where they wanted them. Leaving for the perfect opportunity to unleash the aforementioned “Surprise Guest”.

Probably the worst kept surprise in the history of surprises, whispers of a possible Kanye West appearance seemed too good to be true, however, after what was already a historical moment in not only Chicago, but hip hop history, there was only one way to end it.

Kanye West delivered the knock out blow and gave everybody what they hoped for. Making a rare Chicago appearance, Mr. West did not disappoint and went over and beyond even the most optimistic concert goers expectations…admittedly going over his allotted time to perform, Kanye generously jumped from hit song to hit song with a crowd of admirers reciting every word.

The moment of the night was when he was joined by his Fellow Chicagoans on stage to perform songs that have never been seen performed live.

What promised to be an incredible show on paper, fulfilled and exceeded its potential and brought Common’s vision to fruition. A violence free night with Rap’s elite, left me with only one regret…that more people weren’t able to witness this inaugural event.

In fact, I was surprised at the number of people that hadn’t even heard of the fest. I’d put my money on word spreading quickly and next years show being an even bigger event…I’m not sure you can top this one talent wise…but if anyone can do it, Common is capable.
