Giuliana Rancic Apologizes for Comments About Zendaya’s Braids

24 Feb, 2015

While E!’s Fashion Police is known for its shocking and blunt critiques of celebrity style, Giuliana Rancic acknowledged Tuesday (Feb. 24) that one of those critiques “did cross the line.”

Rancic drew the ire of Zendaya and her many supporters after commenting on Monday’s Fashion Police that the Disney star might smell like patchouli or weed thanks to her braided hairstyle. Zendaya, in turn, took to social media to call attention to the host’s “outrageously offensive” comments. “There is a fine line between what is funny and disrespectful,” she wrote.

While Rancic quickly apologized on Twitter, arguing that her quips had nothing to do with race but with Zendaya’s “bohemian chic look,” some people felt she was explaining away her use of stereotypes and not taking responsibility.

So on Tuesday night’s E! News, she took responsibility, offering a minute-long apology to Zendaya and anyone else affected by her flippant remarks. “I do understand that something I said last night did cross the line,” she said on air. “I want to say to Zendaya and anyone else out there who I hurt that I am so sincerely sorry. This really has been a learning experience for me.”

It remains to be seen whether this apology will be enough for Fashion Police co-host Kelly Osbourne, who threatened to leave the show if everyone involved didn’t “make it right” within 24 hours.
