New York Mets Pitcher Johan Santana Out for Season

29 Mar, 2013

Johan Santana likely is out for the season. And his career might be in jeopardy.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson, speaking Thursday night on a conference call with reporters, said that Santana has a probable re-tear of the anterior capsule in his left shoulder.

A second surgery for Santana is a “strong possibility,” Alderson said, and almost certainly would sideline Santana for all of 2013.

Santana, 34, missed the entire ’11 season after his first surgery on Sept. 24, 2010. But he came back in ’12, pitching Opening Day for the Mets and throwing the first no-hitter in team history on July 1.

He was never the same after that performance, going 3-7 with an 8.27 ERA in his next 10 starts, then getting placed on the disabled list for the rest of the season on Aug. 22 with lower back inflammation.

He is due to make  $25.5 million this season and is in the sixth and final year of his $137.5 million deal.
