NFL Suspends Johnny Football But We Don’t Think He Cares

30 Jun, 2016

Johnny Manziel has been suspended four games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, and he faces further suspension under the personal conduct policy, a league source confirmed for cleveland.com.

Manziel’s four-game drug ban, which becomes effective immediately, was first reported by TMZ, who also talked to Manziel on Wednesday.

If Manziel signs with a team for the 2016 season — which seems unlikely at this point — he would sit out at least the first four games. But he’s likely to be suspended more games under the personal conduct policy for the events of this off-season, which include a misdemeanor assault charge against his ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley.

The Browns might be able to recoup some of the more than $2.713 million in guaranteed money they still owe Manziel because of the suspension.

On Wednesday, Manziel told TMZ that he plans to get ‘completely sober’ on Friday. The vow comes after a party-fueled off-season for the former Browns quarterback that included two car accidents and one alleged trashed rental house for which he’s being sued.

A source told cleveland.com they believe Manziel is serious about getting sober, working out and getting healthy.

News of the suspension comes less than a week after Manziel’s father, Paul, told ESPN that his son has a serious drug problem.

“He’s a druggie,” Paul Manziel said. “It’s not a secret that he’s a druggie. I don’t know what to say other than my son is a druggie and he needs help.

“He just hasn’t seeked it yet. Hopefully he doesn’t die before he comes to his senses. That’s about all you can say. I don’t know what else to say. I hate to say it but I hope he goes to jail. I mean, that would be the best place for him. So we’ll see.

“He’s either going to die, or he’s going to figure out that he needs help. It’s one of the two. But we’ve done everything that we can do. Life goes on. You can’t just chase somebody that’s not willing to listen. The story is not going to change. It’s the same.”

Paul Manziel went on to say, “If I have to bury him, I’ll bury him. That’s the fact. So if not, if he calls me and needs help, I’ll go get him. Until then, he’s on his own. I’ve done everything I can do. There is nothing [else] I can do as a father. Nothing…. It is, what it is. He’s a druggie and everybody needs to accept it.”
