Nobody Loves The World Cup Like This Legend

26 Jun, 2018

Diego Maradona has blamed a white wine binge for his extraordinary behaviour at a World Cup clash last night when he stunned millions of TV viewers with a snarling one-fingered salute.

The Argentinian was seen dancing wildly, unveiling a banner of himself and then appearing to fall asleep as he sat in the stands during his country’s crunch Group D clash against Nigeria in Saint Petersburg.

When Argentina secured a 2-1 victory with a dramatic late winner, cameras focussed on the 57-year-old as he angrily gave the middle finger to fans below his seat in the stadium’s VIP area.

Images have emerged of Maradona being helped from his seat and having his pulse checked by medics – sparking reports he had been rushed to hospital.  He later denied this in an Instagram post, insisting he was ‘fine’ but that his ‘neck hurt a lot.’

Social media users have highlighted what they claimed was a suspicious-looking white residue smudged on the glass barrier in front of him – but it could just as easily have been harmless stains or fingerprints or on the surface.

In a WhatsApp recording sent to Argentinian journalists, the World Cup winner later blamed white wine for his behaviour.

Reports in his native country have claimed that he confessed to boozing before being helped away from his VIP box after falsely being declared dead following Argentina’s win.

The football legend rubbished reports he had suffered a fatal heart attack in a WhatsApp recording he sent to a journalist friend and admitted: ‘Where we were they were only serving white wine. Yes, we drank all the wine, but now I’m talking to you and I’m telling you the truth.’

He sent the voice message to fellow Argentinian Daniel Arcucci as he was forced to deny the online death hoax claims before taking to Instagram to insist his problems were the result of ‘neck pain.’

He said in the rambling recording, sent as he reached Moscow on a private jet in the early hours of this morning and fake reports he had died flooded social media: ‘I swear on the lives of my mum, my grandson Benjamin and my son Dieguito Fernando’s life that nothing happened.’

Urging his journalist friend, who released the voice message online, to tell the world there had been no problem, he added: ‘At the end of the first half we went to eat. I like red wine and there was white wine.’

Maradona also claimed in a tired-sounding WhatsApp voice message to partner Rocio Olivia as he touched down in Moscow: ‘Hello my love. No heart attack, no injection, nothing.

‘I don’t know where they’re getting it from that I had heart problems or I had to be an adrenaline shot. It all seems so mad, so stupid.’

Slurring his words and appearing to contradict his own admission he had binged on wine to his pal, he added: ‘It’s 3am and we’re just getting back to Moscow without any problems. No alcohol or important story.’

Before he got to bed – but after the two WhatsApp messages he sent – Maradona took to Instagram to insist in Spanish, Italian and English he was okay and rubbish reports he was taken to hospital.

He wrote: ‘I want to tell everyone that I am fine, that I am not, neither was I interned.
