06 Aug, 2012
London-With their team leading by just one point at halftime and struggling on defense for the second consecutive game, LeBron James and Kevin Durant took over offensively and defensively in the third quarter and ensured a rout.
The USA today reports James scored nine of his 18 points and Durant 17 of his 28 in the third quarter and the U.S. took care of Argentina 126-97 in the final game of group play.
James scored his points early in the quarter, and then Durant went on his scoring barrage. He made 5-for-6 on three-pointers including one from 27-feet.
The U.S. outscored Argentina 42-17 in the third quarter.
It got a little intense at the end of the third quarter when Argentina’s Facundo Campazzo undercut Carmelo Anthony and hit him in the groin area, on his three-point attempt, which he made at the end of the third quarter. The U.S. and Argentina players had to be separated and technical fouls were called on each team.
The USA finished 5-0 in Group A play. The quarterfinals, which begin Wednesday, are set. In one half of the bracket, it’s USA-Australia and Brazil-Argentina, and in the other half, it’s Russia-Lithuania and France-Spain. The four winners play in Friday’s semifinals, and the bronze- and gold-medal games are Sunday.
