Nate Berkus Discusses ‘The Things That Matter’ in Chicago

27 Oct, 2012

One of Chicago’s favorite designers Nate Berkus was in town as part of his 5-city tour for his new book The Things That Matter.  After doing television and promotional appearances, Berkus settled down for a book signing at the Jayson Home store where his fans were able to get an up-close and personal look at the man of the hour.

While it was marketed as a book signing, it was more like an event.  Guests walked up the stairs into the main level of Jayson Home where they were greeted by a tin barrel filled with miniature champagne cans.  Matching pink and white stripped straws stood tall in a glass by its side.   Just in case champagne wasn’t your forte, a tin barrel filled with beer was an arms’ length away.  Waitresses in all black held silver trays topped with little bites and shot glasses of soup.

Impeccably dressed men gave the women a run for their money as guests mingled in a space that looked as if it were designed by Berkus himself.  Jayson Home’s open-space and décor proved to be an exceptional host.  Even filled with people, the room was warm and inviting.

Glass chandeliers hung from the ceiling.  Pictures of various size frames hung on the brick walls.  Comfortable chairs and sofas sat throughout the store snuggled amongst wooden tables and bookcases that had their own separate story to tell.  Even the incubator filled with plants fit into the theme.

Berkus sat at a table in the back of the store where he signed copies of the book that shares intimate stories from his life and introduces readers to people who influenced him.  Portraits of Berkus’ home and 12 others are featured in the book that retails for $35.  However, it may be the philosophies within that is the books’ true gem.  Amongst the glossy paper and impressive photos are the meanings behind the things that fill these spaces.  The book offers insight into Berkus’ philosophy that, ‘Our homes tell our stories; they reflect the places we’ve been and the people we’ve loved along the way—and there can be no more beautiful design for living than that.’

This is just another example of how Nate Berkus sets himself apart. The book and the signing sounds like it was well put together and a tribute to the high standards we’ve come to expect from him.
