Texas Sheriff’s Deputy Killed in “Ambush”
29 Aug, 2015
A suspect was taken into custody early Saturday just hours after authorities said he shot and killed a sheriff’s deputy pumping gas into his patrol car at a Houston gas station, police said.
The man was apprehended by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office at his mother’s house before dawn on Saturday not far from the site of the ambush on Friday night, Houston Police Officer John Moore said.
“She called to tell them he was there,” Moore said.
“There is a suspect in custody believed to be the shooter,” the officer said.
The suspect, whose identity was not immediately released, was being held in the Harris County jail, Moore said.
The deputy was in uniform and filling up his car with gas when the gunman approached from behind and fired several shots, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy Thomas Gilliland told reporters.
“The deputy then fell to the ground. The suspect then continued over to him and shot the deputy again multiple times as the deputy laid on the ground,” he said.
Live video from the scene in northwest Houston, about 20 miles from downtown, showed police tape across the perimeter of the gas station. Dozens of officers were on the scene.
The deputy, identified on the Sheriff’s Office’s Twitter feed as Darren Goforth, was described as a 10-year veteran assigned to the west district, Gilliland said.
