Captain America Wins Home Run Derby

16 Jul, 2018

Bryce Harper gave the 43,698 fans the show they had so eagerly anticipated in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby on Monday night, staging a late rally to win the final round against the Cubs’ Kyle Schwarber.

Harper hit nine homers in the last 47 seconds of final, including one at the horn, to tie Schwarber at 18, before launching a homer in the bonus round to take home the title.

Harper walked up the first-base line and threw his bat in the air as the final home run landed. He becomes just the third player to win the Home Run Derby in their home ballpark, joining Todd Frazier for the Reds in 2015 and Ryne Sandberg of the Cubs in 1990.

With each move Harper made, each time his name was announced, the crowd worked itself into a frenzy. They roared when he was introduced before the start of the Derby. Then again as he stepped up to the plate, and pointed to the D.C. flag bandanna around his head. Decked out in an American flag arm sleeve, his walkup song from the regular season, “Flower” by Moby, blared throughout the stadium for his first at-bat.

Harper eliminated both the Braves’ Freddie Freeman in the first round and the Dodgers’ Max Muncy in the second round by the score of 13 home runs to 12, with Harper launching his final dinger with more than a minute to spare.
