Chicago Director Takes Home NAACP Image Award
07 Feb, 2016
Director’s Clarence ‘Coodie’ Simmons who hails from the south side of Chicago and Chike Ozah have come a long way from their directorial debut! Starting with Kanye West’s first video, Through The Wire, they’ve made tremendous strides on the entertainment seen!
After already wowing people with the dope ESPN doc Benji, a 30 For 30 story on Chicago high school hoop star Ben Wilson, they proved they weren’t going quietly into the night.
Coodie and Chike did it again and are now one of the latest recipients of the coveted NAACP Image Award, winning for the amazing documentary Muhammed Ali:The People’s Champ which aired on BET late last year. The documentary is a unique look on how Ali influenced hip hop culture. Everyone from rapper T.I., to former boxer Mike Tyson, to his daughter Laila Ali paid homage to one of the greatest men to grace the ring.
Many, including myself, see great things coming from Coodie and Chike! With their company Creative Control, they’ll be bringing more amazing projects with a unique perspective. Just to think these guys met at MTV in New York by happenstance nearly 15 years ago and are now making historic magic together. Congratulations to them and can’t wait to see what’s next.
Chicago natives rapper/actor Common and comedian Deon Cole also paid tribute to Coodie on social media:
