Drone Delivers Drugs….To a Prison!

05 Aug, 2015

A package dropped by a drone near a Mansfield Correctional Institution recreation yard contained heroin, marijuana and tobacco, investigators say.

According to a report from the Mansfield Correctional Institution, it happened July 29 at about 2:30 p.m.

Officials initially responded to a fight that broke out in the north recreation yard. Other inmates from both the north and a south recreation yard began running to the fight. The inmates were all ordered to the ground, taken to the prison gyms and searched.

When jail authorities reviewed camera footage, it was determined that a drone had dropped a package into the north recreation yard for one of the inmates right before the fight started.

Another inmate picked it up, however, and threw it over the fence to the south recreation yard, which set off the fight, reports state.

After the inmates were cleared from the recreation yards, prison officials searched the yards and several other areas of the property before eventually finding the package in an equipment room.

The package contained 144 grams of tobacco, 65.4 grams of marijuana and 6.6 grams of heroin, reports state.

Corrections spokeswoman JoEllen Smith previously said using drones to transport banned items is common around the country, but it’s only happened in Ohio a few times.
