Mindy Kaling’s Four Weddings and a Funeral
31 Jul, 2019
Nathalie Emmanuel plummeted from a wall during the finale of Game of Thrones and landed smack in the middle of a Mindy Kaling rom-com. Kaling teams with Hulu for the remake of the classic 1994 film, Four Weddings and a Funeral, in a reimagined 10-episode tv series.
Fans of the original will be delighted to see the infamous opening scene was untouched as well as the Andie MacDowell guest appearance. The updated version lends the lead role to a female lead and advances the genre with diversity and complexity of characters.
Kaling’s remake Hugh Grant’s original character is written for Nathalie Emmanuel, who plays Maya, an American speechwriter heading to London to catch up with old friends. At the airport she has a meet-cute with Kash (Nikesh Patel) before later finding out he’s actually the fiance of her best friend Ainsley (Rebecca Rittenhouse). There’s also Duffy (John Reynolds) who’s had a crush on Maya since college, Ainsley’s upper-crust neighbour Gemma (Zoe Boyle) and Craig (Brandon Mychal Smith) who’s hiding a big secret from his girlfriend Zara (Sophia La Porta). Their lives and loves intersect in various ways as the plot forces them into five, major life events.
The Trending Report talked with Nikesh Patel and Rebecca Rittenhouse to give us the inside track on why old fans will love the reimagined take on a classic and what will draw new viewers to tune in.
