Please Eddie, Do It For Zumunda!
16 Mar, 2017
Next summer will make 30 years since Eddie Murphy’s classic romantic comedy Coming to America hit theaters.
The film that stars Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Eriq La Salle and James Earl Jones was the third-highest-grossing film in the U.S. that year and was nominated for two Oscars.
Aside from its accolades, the film holds a special place in our hearts because of its realistic portrayal of Black love, barbershops, churches and 1980’s hair/clothing trends.
With all that said, Eddie Murphy essentially trolled our hearts Wednesday night when he tweeted a photo of Imani Izzi (Bell Calloway) with the caption “Coming to America sequel?”
As reported by Complex, this by itself is pretty unusual. Murphy’s Twitter account is almost entirely retweets—the vast majority, in recent weeks, of praise for his poorly-received new movie Mr. Church.
Eddie’s tweet has since been deleted, in addition to his entire account, so the mystery remains. But that didn’t stop Twitter from reacting to the news.
