Alicia Keys is Raw, Bare & Free in New Campaign

03 Jun, 2016

It’s Alicia Keys as we’ve never seen her before! The 35-year-old Grammy winning singer launched a #makeupfree campaign aimed at empowering all women to accept their natural beauty. The Trending Report has an inside look into the raw and un-cut photo shoot that also became the art for her new single “In Common.”

Keys detailed the trials of  growing up in Hollywood in an essay for Lena Durham’s Lenny Letter where she opens up about the pressures women face to be perfect at all times and how going makeup free has empowered her. Keys is open and honest saying how she felt she “was not good enough for the world to see” and how that started to manifest insecurities within herself.

As a result, she started making a lift of all of the things she was tired of. “One of the many things I was tired of was the constant judgment of women. The constant stereotyping through every medium that makes us feel like being a normal size is not normal, and heaven forbid if you’re plus-size,” she writes in the letter. “Or the constant message that being sexy means being naked. All of it is so frustrating and so freakin’ impossible. I realized that during this process, I wrote a lot of songs about masks filled with metaphors about hiding. I needed these songs because I was really feeling those insecurities.”
