‘Hitting the Floor’ With McKinley Freeman

26 May, 2014

Hit the Floor is back with another season that’s sure to make this summer hotter. In its debut, the VH1 series immediately captivated its’ audience with strong characters, storyline twists and dynamic dance routines that left little to the imagination.

The Trending Report talked with McKinley Freeman who says if you thought season one was hot, hold on to your seats. There are “a lot more hard hits” in season two, Freeman said. “The writers for the show did a great job in crafting an amazing story. People are definitely going to be talking about it.”

McKinley certainly gave fans a lot to talk about in season one in his role as Derrick Roman, the sexy, smooth-talking bad boy starter for the L.A. Devils. How he got the role is a story within itself.

After reading for the role of Terrance Wall, producers chased him down in the parking lot requesting that he read for another part. “It ended up being for the role of Derrick” Roman, McKinley said. The role fused McKinley’s love for basketball with his passion for acting.

It was perfect for the 6’3” McKinley who turned down an opportunity to play pro basketball overseas. “Those opportunities didn’t seem that tangible to me in terms of a future at the time” McKinley explains.

With a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and a MBA in Marketing and Management Information Systems, McKinley worked at IBM for several years before securing acting roles. His notion that acting chose him seems to ring true. “I didn’t know where the opportunity (to act) would come from for me” McKinley said. “Then I met some people who were casting for All My Children and I was thinking why not. I mainly didn’t want to look back and wonder, what if?”

McKinley has since secured roles including Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, End of Watch with Jake Gyllenhall and a cameo in the upcoming movie Best Thanksgiving Ever.

But for now, fans can look forward to learning a little more about their favorite Hit The Floor characters as season two delves more into who they are and what makes them tick. We know one thing that made Roman tick in season one was Devil Girl Ahsha Hayes played by Taylour Paige. This begs the question, ‘does Roman get the girl?’  “Does anybody ever really get the girl?” McKinley responds.

“Some questions are answered right away in season two and there’s a lot more to look forward to.” With that, fans will watch with bated breath.
