It’s OJ Simpson Vs. Game of Thrones at This Years Emmys

FX’s limited series “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” which explored the racial tensions that animated America’s criminal justice system two decades before Black Lives Matter‎, landed top nominations in the Primetime Emmy Awards race on Thursday.

“The People v. O.J. Simpson” scored 22 nominations in the limited series category, including two best actor nods for Cuba Gooding Jr and Courtney B. Vance, and a best actress nod for Sarah Paulson.

HBO’s ensemble medieval fantasy “Game of Thrones” led the nominees with 23 overall nods including best drama, two for best supporting actor and three for best supporting actress. The show won outstanding drama series at last year’s Emmys.

“Game of Thrones” will compete for best drama with Showtime’s “Homeland,” FX’s “The Americans,” AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” the final season of PBS’s “Downton Abbey,” Netflix’s “House of Cards” and USA Network’s freshman drama “Mr. Robot.”

In the comedy series category, HBO’s political satire “Veep,” led with 17 nominations, including best actress for Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

“Veep” will compete for best comedy with HBO’s “Silicon Valley,” ABC’s “Black-ish” and “Modern Family,” Netflix’s “Master of None” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” and Amazon’s “Transparent.”

Netflix’s women’s prison dramedy “Orange is the New Black,” a usual critical darling and previous best comedy nominee, did not land any major Emmy nominations this year.

The Emmy Awards, voted for by the 20,000-plus members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, are the top honors for U.S. television. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Sept. 18.
