Fashion Just Got Punk’d by Jeannie Mai

18 Sep, 2015

Is there room for yet another fashion-based television show? The Game Show Network says, ‘Yes.’ They’re taking fashion and steaming it up with their latest addition, Steampunk’d.  The Trending Report talked with host Jeannie Mai who told us why this isn’t your ordinary fashion series.

You won’t see a lot of measuring tape or sewing machines in any of the 8-episodes ordered for GSN’s latest series. Instead, Steampunk’d contestants (also known as “Makers”) create designs using 19th century inspired industrial steam-powered machines.   Each week, the “Makers” work in teams and compete in a series of pressure-filled challenges designed to test their unique abilities to transform ordinary objects and fashion into creative masterpieces.  One will be eliminated each week with the last “Maker” standing taking home the $100,000 grand prize.

Steampunk isn’t a style, it’s a movement – a retro-futuristic design movement seen in everything from fashion, to technology, to pop culture.  “It’s really fascinating because Steampunk isn’t anything that you can go into a store and purchase. There’s not a store out there in any region where you can buy Steampunk. You’ve got to create it, you’ve got to make it, you’ve got to pick something and put life into it in order to give it that amazing mysterious, exotic look that it has.” Mai tells The Trending Report.

Hosting the show is a bit nostalgic for Mai who’s extremely familiar with the genre. “When I was 17, Steampunk was one of my first major style influences.  I was all about it!  I come from the Bay Area and there’s a huge Steampunk movement there,” Mai says.

Fashion would continue to be a huge part of Mai’s life.  She continues to appear as a fashion expert on national shows including the “Today Show” and “E! News” and serves as one of five hosts of the popular daytime talk show “The Real.”

Because Mai started as a celebrity make-up artist it was only right that she gave us tips on how to stay flawless as we transition from summer to fall make-up.

We also dug a little deeper with a fun game of ‘This or That.’ Listen to find out what Mai would choose when it comes to food, fashion, fall make up styles and fun.

Oh yeah, and if you ever wondered what it’s like hanging with the stars of “The Real” after the cameras go off, we have the answer  for you here.
