Ohio State’s JT Barrett Suspended After Arrest

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired near campus early Saturday, according to reports.

Barrett was arrested after trying to avoid a DUI checkpoint near the Ohio State campus according to ElevenWarriors.com, a website covering the Buckeyes. Barrett, 20, reportedly failed a breathalyzer test and was taken into custody by Columbus police.

The university’s athletic department confirmed the incident in a news release Saturday.

“Ohio State University student-athlete J.T. Barrett was cited by Columbus police Saturday morning at a campus area check point with a misdemeanor offense of OVI,” the statement said. “Barrett has been suspended by head coach Urban Meyer from playing in Ohio State’s game against Minnesota on Nov. 7.”

Because Barrett is under the state’s legal drinking age of 21, he could be subject to a two-week suspension under the athletic department’s student-athlete drug and alcohol program, the website reported.

Barrett was released to teammate Cardale Jones, who provided Barrett a ride home, the report said. Barrett won the starting job from Jones before last week’s 49-7 Big Ten win vs. Rutgers. Barrett was the Ohio State starter in 2014 before breaking an ankle in the final regular-season game vs. Michigan.
