President Obama Attends Fundraiser Thrown by Jay-Z and Beyonce

19 Sep, 2012

President Obama told a well-dressed group of donors at Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club on Tuesday night that he isn’t so different from the hip hop power couple hosting his $40,000 per plate fundraiser.

Referring to Jay-Z and Beyonce as “Jay and Bey,” Obama said they all “remember what it’s like not having anything, and we know people who were just as talented as us that didn’t get the same break, the same chance.”

“We understand that … those of us who have been blessed with success and been able to walk through those doors of opportunity, we don’t slam the door behind us. We prop it open,” the president said.

The Obama campaign released a photo on Wednesday of the famous threesome sharing a laugh at the event.

“A couple supporters in a New York state of mind last night” the campaign wrote in a tweet, with a nod to the Jay-Z hit “Empire State of Mind.”

During his speech, Obama said he had one more thing in common with Beyonce’s husband.

“Jay-Z now knows what my life is like,” he said. “We both have daughters, and our wives are more popular than we are.”

“So we’ve got a little bond there,” he added, as the audience laughed. “It’s hard, but it’s okay. It’s okay.”

At the end of his speech, the president got a standing ovation and did a little dance off the stage as Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” played over the club’s sound system.
