Time Magazines 100 Most Influential People List

It’s time for the Time 100, Time magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

For the first time, the issue, hitting newsstands Friday, features seven separate covers, each featuring a member of the list. Jennifer Lawrence, Jay-Z, Elon Musk (CEO and founder, SpaceX; co-founder, Tesla Motors and PayPal), Sen. Rand Paul and teen activist Malala Yousafzai each appear solo on the five domestic split covers. Internationally, Li Na and Aamir Khan are also featured along with some of the U.S. covers.

More highlights from the 2013 Time 100:

• This year’s list includes 35 women.

• President Obama is on the list for the eighth time, more than any other person on the list.

• Other repeats on the list: Joe Biden, Chris Christie, Mario Draghi, Gabrielle Giffords, LeBron James, Xi Jinping, Kim Jong Un, Kate Middleton, Elon Musk, Michelle Obama, Shonda Rhimes, Sheryl Sandberg, Aung San Suu Kyi, Justin Timberlake, Jay Z and Ren Zhengfei.

• Stars on the list include Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, Bryan Cranston, Lena Dunham, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jimmy Fallon, Jay-Z, Jennifer Lawrence, Miguel and Justin Timberlake.

Each person is profiled by another high-profile person. Among them:

Justin Timberlake writes of Jimmy Fallon: “Picture this: I’m in the heart of an impromptu speech at my wedding reception in front of 150 guests, pouring it out to my lovely new bride. You could hear a pin drop. I paused for just a moment in between thoughts. And then there was Jimmy, shouting a joke from his seat, sparking an improv ­between the two of us that went on for a good five or 10 minutes and had all our guests roaring with laughter. … It turned into a moment that everyone there will remember forever. Anyone else would have bombed on that stage.”

Jodie Foster pens a piece on Jennifer Lawrence: “You’ll remember where you were when you first felt it, how you were stuck to one spot like a small animal considering its end. The Jennifer Lawrence Stare. It cuts a searing swath in your gut. A reckoning. I remember going to the cutting rooms of Winter’s Bone. I thought, Sure, this girl can act. Mindy Kaling, by her Office co-worker Ed Helms: “Mindy Kaling embodies the trifecta of being brilliant, wonderful and hilarious. Because that is statistically impossible, it can mean only one thing: she was created by an evil scientist to lull us into a giddy stupor in order to control our minds. … To be made fun of by Mindy is to feel special. I’ve learned so much from working alongside her, and I’m proud to call her a friend. I just wish she hadn’t been created by an evil scientist.”

Shonda Rhimes, by Oprah Winfrey: “Shonda is a story­teller for our times. Courageous in her approach to the work, she’s never played by other people’s rules. … She creates an assemblage of worldly foibles and aspirations. She understands that every dream is valuable and every identity deserves inspection through the looking glass of television.”
