Earvin Johnson Brings ‘Magic’ to Chicago’s Students (Video)

25 Sep, 2013

Earvin “Magic” Johnson joined Gov. Pat Quinn and Chicago’s own rapper/actor Common in Chicago Wednesday to announce his latest of-court business venture.

Through his “Friends of Magic” initiative, Johnson announced the opening of an alternate school for students who have dropped out or are at-risk of dropping out to receive their high school diploma. Johnson says the program provides a ‘free alternative path to earn a high school diploma in an environment that fits their schedule, life circumstances and learning needs.’

The Trending Report attended the event held at Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academy, one of 17 education facilities nationwide backed in part by Johnson’s business enterprises.

The former NBA super star wiped away tears following a speech given by a student who found success through the academy’s education programs.

Contracting with Chicago Public School (CPS) for the Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academy is one of several ways Johnson is giving back to Chicago.  Along with working with Common’s Common Ground Foundation, Johnson has interest in a host of Starbucks, hotels and commercial properties throughout the Chicagoland area.
