How Long Before Trubisky is The Starter in Chicago?
11 Aug, 2017
Mitchell Trubisky might have to wait his turn behind Mike Glennon, but the rookie shined in the spotlight Thursday while the veteran struggled.
Though his final attempt on a potentially game-tying score fell incomplete, Trubisky threw for 166 yards and a touchdown on 18-of-25 passing in his preseason debut against the Denver Broncos. Glennon, who started the game, completed just two of eight attempts for 20 yards and an interception en route to a 0.0 passer rating.
“Our depth chart is not going to change after one game, particularly a preseason game,” said Bears coach John Fox, who added he was “not at all” concerned about Glennon’s outing.
The two quarterbacks’ performances may not amount to much more than preseason buzz, but the night presented an interesting dynamic after the Bears signed Glennon to a three-year, $45 million deal and later traded up to select Trubisky with the No. 2 overall pick.
Trubisky found a rhythm early, completing his first 10 attempts and connecting with Victor Cruz for a touchdown on his opening drive. In his first three series, he led Chicago to 14 first downs with two touchdowns and a field goal.
Trubisky led the Bears 53 yards downfield in the final two minutes, but he was unable to connect with wide receiver Deonte Thompson in the end zone after rolling to his left.
“You can see why he was picked in the draft where he was picked,” Fox said.
Glennon, whom Fox reaffirmed as his starter in July, got off to a rocky start Thursday when his second pass attempt was intercepted by cornerback Chris Harris Jr. and returned for a touchdown. After going three-and-out on the ensuing series, Glennon couldn’t corral an errant shotgun snap by center Cody Whitehair, and the Broncos recovered the fumble.
“I don’t think we need to (overreact to) the first preseason game and one quarter of it,” Glennon said. “Was it what we want? Absolutely not. But it was one quarter of the first preseason game, so it’s definitely fixable.”
