It Took A Lifetime But Run DMC Will Get Their Grammy

Iconic rap trio Run-D.M.C. will be honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award this year, the Recording Academy announced Wednesday (Jan. 13).

The Queens-bred group — comprised of Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Joseph “Reverend Run” Simmons and the late Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell — will join a host of legendary recipients including R&B veteran Ruth Brown, Latin legend Celia Cruz, popular funk band Earth, Wind & Fire, jazz icon Herbie Hancock, counterculture rock act Jefferson Airplane and pop sensation Linda Ronstadt.

“I just got a call from the Grammys!! They shocked me!!,” tweeted Rev Run. “We’re the first rappers to get this award!! Shocked! Grateful!. God is good!!! I’m so honored to be a #GRAMMYs Lifetime Achievement Award recipient this year. Thank you to the Recording Academy!”

Recording Academy President/CEO Neil Portnow praised the 2016 lifetime-achievement recipients in a press release announcing the news. “Each year, The Academy has the distinct privilege of honoring those who have greatly contributed to our industry and cultural heritage, and this year we have a gifted and brilliant group of honorees. Their exceptional accomplishments, contributions, and artistry will continue to influence and inspire generations to come.”

Run-D.M.C. — who will be celebrated in a special ceremony alongside other recipients this spring — was the first rap act to land a gold album with their self-titled 1984 debut and to be nominated for a Grammy. Past honorees include The Beatles, George Harrison, The Bee Gees and Buddy Guy.
