Now Thats An Opening Ceremony

06 Aug, 2016

After all the choreography and pyrotechnics, it was a simple walk that dazzled viewers of the Olympic opening ceremony on Friday night.

Coming out of retirement for one final catwalk, Gisele Bundchen brought a touch of glamour to proceedings at the Maracana Stadium.

Looking resplendent in a thigh-split silver sequinned gown created by Alexandre Herchovitch, the Brazilian strutted across the arena to the sound of bossa nova hit “Girl from Ipanema”, watched by 78,000 in the stadium and millions more around the world.

Beams of light emerged on the darkened surface behind her, designed to replicate the most famous creations of legendary Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.

Earlier in the day, Bundchen, who is married to NFL superstar Tom Brady, posted a message on Instagram with a emotional message for the participants and spectators.

“As I walk down tonight on the longest runway I have ever been on I will be sending out all my love and positivity. I am humbled and honoured to be part of this historic moment for my country,” Bundchen wrote.

“I believe that the unity is the key to creating a world filled with kindness, gratitude, peace, and love.”

Her appearance led to a 1,850% rise in Google searches for the supermodel in just one hour, the search engine said.

She was also the talk of Twitter, where many said she had made walking look like an Olympic event.

Richard Lawson, of Vanity Fair, said: “Gisele literally just walked across the stadium and it was an event.”
